Synopsis

Sheryl Bradshaw, a single woman looking for a suitor on a hit 1970s TV show, chooses charming bachelor Rodney Alcala, unaware that behind the man’s genteel facade, he hides a deadly secret. Some of Sheryl’s bad experiences as an aspiring actress mirror those of Anna Kendrick herself. The comment about Sheryl’s breasts is “taken verbatim from something that happened to me when I was 19.” The coins stolen from the laundromat are modern-era quarters.

I ended up very frustrated watching it given the fact that I thought it had a really good hook

In the end, the whole thing ends up feeling like a series of short films, only a couple of which I found engaging and when they’re put together into a movie, it ends up feeling repetitive. That’s not to say that it’s not effective, it’s absolutely appropriately brutal in its depiction of violence towards women but also in how it portrays the sexism of the 70s. The main thing that intrigued me about this movie was the idea of ​​the pageant portion and that ended up feeling very undercooked and in the overall narrative, it ultimately didn’t mean much.

There are very effective sequences and it’s really well shot, but it’s so uneven that I couldn’t help but feel disappointed with the final product. The final season of “What We Do in the Shadows” is one of the biggest TV and streaming premieres this month.
