Where It Is Located
The water tower is in the city district of Mitnica, south of the centre of Vukovar. The coordinates lead to the visitor entrance to the complex along Ulica bana Josipa Jelačića. This is not the Old Water Tower by the Danube in the city centre, but a large memorial tower known from wartime footage.
History and Story
The tower was designed by architects Petar Kušan and Sergej Kolobov according to the project idea of the water supply network by Alexander Rose. It was built in an area called Najpar-bašća, on an elevated position above Mitnica. As part of the city’s water supply infrastructure, it became an important point in the Vukovar skyline.
During the Battle of Vukovar in 1991, it suffered 640 direct hits, according to official data from the manager. Although heavily damaged, it did not collapse, thus becoming a symbol of resistance and unity. In the restoration, its wounded exterior was preserved, while the interior was adapted for safe visits and interpretation. Today, it is protected as a technical and memorial monument.
What to See and Why to Visit
The tour allows for a close-up view of the preserved traces of destruction, interpretative content, and the tower’s construction. At the top, there is a viewing platform overlooking Vukovar, the Danube, and the Srem plain. The space is not a classic attraction for a quick visit: the official rules emphasise that it is a place of respect for the victims of the city.
Opening hours and prices change, so they should not be copied into a permanent guide. Before visiting, it is advisable to check the official price list and the homepage for current announcements, special visiting regimes, or temporary closures.
How to Get There and What Is Nearby
The easiest way to reach the complex from the centre of Vukovar is by car, public transport, or a longer walk towards Mitnica. Access is via Bana Jelačića, and parking should be organised in designated areas around the complex. Nearby are Mitnica and the banks of the Danube, while the baroque core, Eltz Castle, and the City Museum line up towards the centre. The memorial visit can be combined with the Memorial Cemetery and other official locations of the Vukovar Nocturne.
