Vepric is located in a wooded area at the foot of Biokovo, along the western approach to Makarska. The sanctuary was envisioned and founded by the Split-Makarska bishop Juraj Carić in the early 20th century, inspired by Lourdes, using a natural cave, rocks, and water as part of the prayer site. Due to the dispersed open spaces, the visit significantly differs from that of a closed church building and requires a bit more time.

History and Significance

Bishop Juraj Carić founded Vepric in 1908, on the fiftieth anniversary of the Lourdes apparition. The natural cave and landscape reminded him of Lourdes, so the area was gradually arranged for Marian devotion and the reception of pilgrims.

Over time, chapels, altars, paths, confessionals, and spaces for larger celebrations were added, but the natural environment remained the foundation of Vepric’s identity. The sanctuary is not a classic city basilica: its components are arranged outdoors and connected by walking paths.

Vepric belongs to the Archdiocese of Split-Makarska and welcomes believers throughout the year. The history of its foundation is well documented on the official website, so motives and dates should be obtained from the sanctuary, not from unverified tourist summaries.

Pilgrimages and Feasts

Significant gatherings are associated with the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes and Marian celebrations throughout the year. Masses and devotions can be held in different parts of the complex, depending on the group and time. How to get there

Vepric is located along the state road at the western entrance to Makarska. The turn-off and entrance should be approached carefully as the road is very busy. From the entrance, the complex is navigated on foot, partly on uneven and slightly uphill paths. For persons with reduced mobility and buses, it is advisable to request current information from the sanctuary before departure. During the summer heat, plan for water and sun protection. The natural space requires silence and appropriate behaviour even outside of mass; the sanctuary is not a shortcut to the beach nor a picnic area.
