History and significance

The Ludbreg sanctuary developed around an Eucharistic event that church tradition places in the chapel of the Batthyány castle. During Mass, a priest doubted the real presence of Christ, after which, according to tradition, he saw blood in the chalice. The relic was later preserved and examined, and Pope Leo X allowed public veneration by a bull in the early 16th century.

The Diocese of Varaždin describes Ludbreg as the only Eucharistic sanctuary in Croatia and one of the older European sites of such devotion. The worship is connected with the parish church of the Holy Trinity, the castle, and the votive chapel in the spacious sanctuary area. The current chapel also recalls the historical vow of the Croatian Parliament.

The history of the sanctuary should be distinguished from the popular legend of Ludbreg as the centre of the world. This urban tale belongs to the tourist identity of the place, while the church pilgrimage is based on the relic and the officially confirmed tradition of veneration of the Precious Blood of Christ.

Pilgrimages and feasts

Pilgrimages to Ludbreg take place throughout the year, with the main multi-day feast gathered around Holy Sunday, the first Sunday in September. The programme takes place in the parish church and the votive chapel and may include processions, confessions, and Masses for different groups. The exact programme and traffic instructions change, so please check on the official website of the sanctuary or parish. For larger groups, prior notification is recommended according to the current instructions of the sanctuary.

How to get there

Ludbreg is connected by road to Varaždin, Koprivnica, and the Drava route. The votive chapel and the large open sanctuary area are located near the city centre, while the parish church and castle are in the heart of the town. During the main pilgrimage, street closures and directed parking are expected. For regular visits, navigation leads directly to the sanctuary area, and central locations can be continued on foot.
