Saint Michael, or Archangel Michael, is the heavenly protector of Šibenik and the entire Šibenik Diocese, and his feast day is celebrated every year on 29 September. This date is also City Day in Šibenik, so the religious and civic programmes intertwine on one of the most important days of the year for the locals. This guide provides verified information about the tradition of the feast, the customs of the celebration, and how to visit the fortress that bears the saint’s name and offers one of the most beautiful views of the Adriatic.

Why Saint Michael is the Protector of Šibenik

The veneration of Saint Michael in the Šibenik area dates back to the 9th century and is linked to the very beginnings of the city. The first sacred building in the old town core, erected within the fortress, was dedicated to Archangel Michael. His figure, as a symbol of strength and victory over evil, has been incorporated into the city coat of arms and seal since the 13th century, where it is still recognised today. Believing in his help and protection, the people of Šibenik chose him as their heavenly patron, and the fortress that dominates the city was named after him.

City Day of Šibenik and the Feast Programme

On City Day, the secular and religious parts of the celebration come together. The morning traditionally begins with a wake-up call from the city band, whose brass orchestra parades through the streets of the old town core announcing the festivities. This is followed by a ceremonial procession and mass, which is held in the Cathedral of St. James, a masterpiece inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. As part of the celebrations, the City also organises a ceremonial session of the City Council where public recognitions are awarded to deserving individuals and institutions.

Alongside the official part, Šibenik and its cultural institutions prepare a rich cultural and entertainment programme every year that can last several days. A detailed schedule for the current year is published by the City of Šibenik and the Šibenik Diocese at the end of September on their official websites, so it is worth checking the timings of individual events just before the feast.

Fortress of Saint Michael Above the Old Town

The most famous monument dedicated to the saint’s name is the Fortress of Saint Michael, the oldest and first restored fortress in Šibenik. It was built on a high, steep rock above the historical core, and over the centuries, especially during the Venetian rule, it was further fortified. Today, from its walls, there is a beautiful view of the old town, the St. Anthony Channel, the bay, and the mouth of the Krka River.

After a major renovation in 2014, the fortress gained a summer stage with a theatre and has become one of the most attractive open-air venues in the region. During the summer season, concerts by domestic and foreign performers are held there, making a visit to the fortress easy to combine with a musical experience under the open sky.

Tickets and Opening Hours

The fortress is located at Zagrađe 21 and is open to visitors daily, usually from 9 AM, with the last entry 30 minutes before closing. The opening hours are adjusted to the season, so it is best to check the exact visiting times on the official websites of the Šibenik Fortresses. All payments are made exclusively in euros, either in cash or by card. The approximate prices for daily tickets are:

  • adults: 11.50 EUR
  • students and pupils: 7.50 EUR
  • family ticket: 28.00 EUR

For those who wish to visit more fortresses, a combined ticket for three fortresses is available (15.00 EUR for adults, 8.50 EUR for students and pupils, and 33.00 EUR for families). Free entry is granted to children under 7 years, members of the professional association ICOM, and persons with disabilities with one companion. Prices for organised groups are arranged in advance.

How to Get There and What Else to See

Šibenik is located in the middle of the Dalmatian coast, between Zadar and Split, making it easily accessible by the A1 motorway and the Adriatic highway from both directions. The old town core is pedestrianised, and the Fortress of Saint Michael is reached by climbing through steep stone streets and steps; the nearest parking is located near the fire station and Ana Rukavina Park, northwest of the fortress.

Along with the fortress and the Cathedral of St. James, take a short walk to visit the Renaissance City Hall, the stone Šibenik alleys, and the coastal promenade, and for history lovers, we recommend the nearby Barone Fortress. The feast of Saint Michael is an opportunity to experience authentic Šibenik tradition, as well as to enjoy one of the most beautiful towns on the Croatian coast in peace, away from the peak tourist season.
