History
Antun III. Pejačević and his son Antun IV. commissioned the construction of the castle between 1800 and 1804 on the site of a demolished medieval burg. The building is shaped at the transition from late Baroque to Classicism, with an elongated façade and a pronounced central part. The family carried the title of Virovitica nobility.
The castle changed owners and purposes during the 19th and 20th centuries. The City Museum was established in the mid-20th century and has been operating in the castle for decades. The museum collections include archaeological, ethnographic, cultural-historical, and artistic materials from the Virovitica region.
A complete renovation of the castle and revitalisation of the park have enabled a new permanent exhibition titled “The Age of Wood.” The exhibition not only showcases noble life but interprets the forest, crafts, everyday life, and the development of the town through wood. Bridges, paths, the moat, and the park are part of the renewed urban whole, not a separate decoration of the museum.
