The Church of Our Lady of the Snow in Dubranec is one of the more important sacred monuments in the southern part of the Velika Gorica area. It is situated on a hill in Vukomeričke Gorice, and its structure and furnishings reflect baroque history, a preserved wooden altar, and a historicist restoration associated with architect Herman Bollé. Due to its location above the settlement, the church is also a recognizable landscape point of Dubranec.

Basic Information

Where it is located

The church stands on a hill above the central part of Dubranec. The map leads to the church area and the approach at house number 3, not just to the centre of the settlement. The final part of the access leads along a local road through the settlement; due to the slope and limited space, vehicles should be parked so as not to obstruct residents or the church approach.

History and Story

According to the city and tourist presentation, the chapel of Our Lady of the Snow was built around 1650 to allow worship to be held in winter when access to the older church of St. Catherine was difficult. The building was enlarged, and a record from 1726 describes it as well-maintained and orderly. Over time, it took on the role of a parish church.

A major restoration began in 1881 under the leadership of Herman Bollé and Izidor Kršnjavi. The late baroque wooden altar was preserved, while the façade, altars, and part of the furnishings received a historicist expression. The city brochure mentions wall paintings by Clausen, altars designed according to Bollé’s concept, and the façade sculpture by sculptor Morak. The church suffered significant damage in the earthquake of 2020, so the current state of internal access should be checked before visiting.

What to see and why to visit

From the outside, it is worth observing the church’s position on the hill, the bell tower, and the design of the façade. If entry is permitted, the most important details are the wooden painted ceiling and the historicist altar furnishings. This is an active religious space: visits should be adjusted to worship, possible works, and parish instructions. For the condition of the church and arrangements for a visit, use the contacts of the Parish of Our Lady of the Snow.

How to get there and what is nearby

Dubranec is road-connected to Velika Gorica via Vukomeričke Gorice. The route is more suitable for cars or bicycles than for spontaneous arrival by public transport, whose schedule should be checked before departure. The visit can be combined with a short drive through the hilly settlements and traditional landscape of Turopolje, without entering private properties.
