The Calvary in Požega is located on a small hill west of the main square. The sacred landscape is shaped by the stations of the cross, and the site is also an important link between the historical core, the Tekija spring, and the path that continues towards Sokolovac.

Basic Information

  • Type: calvary and open-air sacred site
  • Location: Požega, Požega-Slavonia County
  • Period: the first wooden crosses were erected by the Franciscans in 1724; the current arrangement dates from 1885.
  • Access: on foot via a steep city street and path

Where it is located

The Calvary is situated between the historical core and the western city hills. From the City Hall, it is approached in the direction of Jagodnjak, and the cartographic point marks the area of the Calvary on the ascent towards Sokolovac. The location is close enough to the centre that a separate transport is not required for the visit.

History and Story

The Franciscans erected wooden crosses on the hill in 1724, thus shaping a space for devotion outside the then city core. According to the Tourist Board of the City of Požega, the current arrangement was created in 1885, when the dilapidated wooden stations were replaced with stone ones. This preserved the earlier layout, but the site gained a more permanent material form.

The Calvary developed in close proximity to the city, but is sufficiently isolated so that the ascent and stations form a separate spatial unit. Church ceremonies are held on the hill, but their dates change, so they should be checked in the current announcements of the parish or local tourist board before visiting. The historical years refer to the establishment of the crosses and the current arrangement, not to the schedule of events.

What to see and why to visit

Visitors see a series of stone stations arranged along the ascent and gain a clear picture of how the sacred landscape is integrated into the relief of Požega. The site is interesting even without participating in the ceremony as it shows the continuity of public devotion since the 18th century and opens views towards the lower parts of the city.

How to get there and what is nearby

From the Trinity Square, one should pass by the City Hall and head towards Jagodnjak. The ascent is short but steep in places, making it more suitable for walking than for a car tour. The Calvary is a natural starting point for continuing towards Sokolovac. At the foot are Tekija, the chapel of St. Roch, and the Kraljević House, making it easy to form a circular city route.
