In Diablo, the main part of the story takes place under the cathedral floors of a small town called Tristram. It is here that Diablo, the Lord of Terror, is defeated by a nameless warrior after winning many previous battles.
Deckard Kane tells the story to the next group of adventurers who pass through the Rogue Camp in Diablo II
The nameless warrior who defeated Diablo pushed the demon’s soul into his forehead in an attempt to contain the demon’s essence within his own body. Later in canon, Diablo suggests that this is what he meant, so that if he is defeated, he has an “escape plan” instead of dying. The Nameless Warrior is unfortunate from the moment he does this and is gradually corrupted over the next few days by the demon’s spirit.
Act V), and minor bosses in the first two acts
One of these adventurers appears in the aftermath of the devastation wrought by the now nameless warrior, beginning with the Corrupted Warrior (known as the Dark Wanderer in Diablo II) and trying to find the cause of the evil. As the player progresses through each of the four acts, he encounters two Prime Evils (Mephisto – Act III and Diablo – Act IV, the final main evil with Baal being the main boss in the expansion pack, i.e. Two lesser evils who act as (Andariel – Act I and Duriel – Act II).
The player discovers the truth behind the corruption and the history of the Spirit Stones
Diablo Mephisto (Lord of Hatred) and Baal (Lord of Destruction) were freed from their soul stones, having long ago been taught how to corrupt them by the fallen angel Izual (The Act IV minor boss). Eventually, the player finally catches up and kills Mephisto and Diablo according to their respective acts. The story continues in the game’s expansion, where the player pursues the last of the Prime Evils: Baal, who is after the mythical Worldstone in an attempt to corrupt it.
